‘The Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation as an Order of Public Peace (‘Landfriedensordnung’)’ by Professor Siegrid Westphal (University of Osnabrück)
Senior Parlour, Gonville and Caius College, 5-6:30pm
The network is pleased to welcome a distinguished scholar from the historical home of peaceamaking, Osnabrück in Westphalia, to tell the story of the Holy Roman Empire in its last three centuries of existence with a focus on the concept and implementation of a Perpetual Public Peace. Professor Westphal’s talk will analyse the Old Reich as a system for resolving conflict and maintaining security, tracing the vitality of its functioning all the way through Early Modernity into the eighteenth century. As ever, all are more than welcome to attend.
